Lawn Turf Buying Guidance

Before buying grass and beginning work on a lawn, there are a few purchasing tips you need to be aware of. Finding a reliable and leading lawn turf supplier can make all the difference. We’re specialists in turf, and offer the best quality product available in Bedfordshire.

If you’re buying turf online for the first time, don’t panic. We’re here to help you.

Know how much turf you need to order

It sounds obvious, but knowing how much turf you’re going to need before you place an order is crucial. Measuring requires you to know the gardens width and length so that you are able to calculate how many rolls you’re going to need.

To measure your space, you could use a turf calculator, but to make things easier simply multiply your gardens width x length to give you the square coverage needed. All of our fresh products comes in 1m2 square lengths.

For example, if your garden was 8m in length and 10m wide. You’d need to order 80 rolls of grass or enough to cover 80m2. As a general rule, it’s best to order an additional 5-10% of what you need to account of any wastage.

Now that you know how much you’ll need you can place your order and our team will confirm a day of delivery with you.

How to lay your fresh turf correctly

If you’ve never laid turf before, then it may well be worth using a professional installer or gardener. This will reduce the wastage and prevent you from having to order more turf if you need it.

However, if you’re going to be installing and rolling out the turf yourself, you can follow this process:

  1. Prepare the soil – Before your delivery date, take the time prepare the soil correctly. Remove any weeds and dig over the soil to a depth of around 15-20cm. You can then use topsoil to level off the ground by using a rake or roller to ensure the surface is smooth and ready for your new fresh garden turf.
  2. Installation – Once the area is levelled, you can start to lay the rolls from the straightest edge, using staggered joints as this will prevent water from pooling and building up over time. Keep the rolls tight together and avoid any large gaps.
  3. Watering – Once the turf is installed, you can apply a small amount of pressure to make sure that the turf has good contact with the soil. You’ll then need to water it thoroughly immediately after installing and continue watering on a regular basis until the roots become established into the soil.
  4. Avoid walking on it – To make sure your newly laid lawn is secured for many years to come, avoid walking on the turf and any traffic altogether for around 3-4 weeks.
  5. Mowing – Once the turf has established itself and had time to grow, the first mow and cut is important. Keep the setting on your lawn mower at its highest, reducing the setting over time on subsequent mows.

What do you need?

It can be easy to become overwhelmed with the sheer range of turfing options available, but getting the choice right depending on your requirements is important. Our online store stocks a real variety of products for all types of projects. Our MAXIMA product is a great all rounder for families that have children and pets.

If you’re after something thats a little more hardwearing, our VALIDUS RTF cultivated turf can help due to its durability and ability to adapt to a garden project that will eventually have a lot of foot traffic.

If you want something with less maintenance, our ECO LAWN artificial options are a great alternative.

What type of soil are you going to be laying it on?

If your garden soil contains a lot of clay, you may need to remove some of the soil and replace it with a mixture of topsoil and compost or even mulch to give the turf the best chance of establishing itself. If you’re working with a landscaper, you can test the soil to see if you need to apply a pre-turfing fertiliser to make sure that your garden looks great once the turf has been installed.

maintaining & WATERING

Once your new lawn is established, you need to make sure you have a regular maintenance routine, especially in the dryer, summer months when the grass can easily become dehydrated and dry.

In hot conditions, you’ll want to water at least twice a day, depending on the temperatures, maybe even more than that but be careful not to overwater and drown it out.

When it comes to mowing – cutting every 4-6 weeks, with the mower starting on the highest setting, and then bringing the setting down on each subsequent pass. Ideally you want to cut no more than the top third and over time, you may even want to consider applying lawn feed to keep it enriched.

Laying your quality grass turf at the right time

There are typically two core periods of the year that are the best time to install new turf. The earliest time in the year would be Spring – between March and May, with the second period later in the year in Autumn – between September and November.

Some landscapers and DIY gardeners do also have success in the summer months but this will require much more preparation as soil tends to dry out and can make it difficult for new grass to establish and sow their roots into the soil.

Can I lay new turf next to old?

We wouldn’t recommend installing on top of or next to any existing grass. This is for a number of reasons, but mainly due to the risk of pests and disease that may infect your new garden. To maintain the unbeatable quality of our product range, remove any old rolls before installing your new ones.

Can I return any excess I Don't need?

Unfortunately, we’re not able to accept any returns. As our turf is a live product we’re unable to guarantee the same high quality for the next customer that places an order. Instead, we recommend contacting some local charities and organisations that may be able to help you find an alternative solution to prevent any further wastage.
